I am the Chinese translator of Xs works. It gives me great pleasure to hear that Professor X has been nominated for the Dan David Prize and I could not help taking the liberty of writing you a few lines to sketch out the profound influence of Professor X on Chinese academia. From the dawn of 20th century, Chinese academia has once again begun to pay much more attention to the western classical studies, partly due to Chinas accelerating process of integrating into the world which implies that with the rapid development, China has to be confronted with and rediscover the whole tradition of western world in order to identify ourselves properly. Professor X, as one of the most prominent political philosophers and the leading scholar of the influential Straussian school, has been holding considerable appeal to Chinese mind. Actually, its thanks to Prof. Xs inventive and fruitful research that Chinese intellectuals have become more familiar with and benefitted a lot from Straussian approaches to the studies of classical texts and politics, which offered Chinese a methodological alternative to recognizing and reading the intellectual heritage of our own. Although the published Chinese version of Prof. Xs works up to now only covered a fraction of his numerous publications, plenty of Prof. Xs highly original works, as well as his other copious publications, have already attracted a large audience among Chinese academia. A good example is that while the Chinese translation has not appeared yet, Prof. Xs famous book on Montesquieus philosophy of liberalism is so widely read across the country as an invaluable source of reference that to a great extent the research on the western Enlightenment thought still depends on his illuminating insight into this topic. I have to say he is a seasoned academic who is very accomplished in using his close textual analysis to reveal the real spirit of western political and legal tradition. With the help of his probing perspective, we can deeply comprehend the distinct pedigree of western civilization and the possible predicament of modernity which may not be exclusive to the western world as far as the background of globalization is concerned. Especially, Prof. Xs excellent English version and his unique interpretation of Plato s Laws have opened a window into the Platos world for Chinese mind, and unsurprisingly, have entered graduate seminar on major subjects as diverse as political science, legal philosophy, political philosophy, ethics, and so on at almost every universities of high prestige in China. Since his outstanding efforts make it possible for readers--especially the Chinese readers who have no acquaintance with the classical Greek--to get a direct and undistorted access to Platos thought, more and more professors and students choose Prof. Xs version and his reading to facilitate their understanding of the longest and most abstruse one of Platos dialogues. Meanwhile, Chinese scholars also have been aware of the significance and necessity of translating his works into native language. Accordingly, with a view to different emphases, many scholars are engaged in rendering Prof. Xs distinguished works into Chinese. One Chinese version of his book-length interpretive essay of Platos Law translated by Dr. Zhu Ying was published by Huaxia Publishing House on 2012. My translation of Xs whole English version of Platos Law along with his interpretive study drew the attention of National Educational Department of China and was listed as one of the national research projects. This forthcoming Chinese translation will be published by the Commercial Press, a venerable publisher of great credit and renown in China. It is worth mentioning in passing that as a scholar of international stature, Prof. X is also solicitous about the research work in the related fields carried out abroad, aiming at the cultural communication and academic advancement, and he is always ready to help the young generation, even tyros outside America, encouraging them to persevere in academically challenging tasks in response to the special inner calling. It is for these reasons that I offer high recommendation for Prof. X without reservation. Should any further particulars concerning the great admiration for and widespread acceptance of Professor Xs achievements among Chinese scholars be required, please do not hesitate to contact me and I shall very much please to communicate the same to you.Im looking forward to a favorable outcome.Seasons greetings.Yours sincerely,Su WanerAssociate professorLaw School, Northwest Normal University967 Anning East Road,Lanzhou, GANSU, 730070,P.
